Thoughts: Newest model or no?

with one comment

When it comes to buying gears, we often come across choices like whether to get the newest model or to go for the previous version and save a few hundred dollars.

It could simply be that the big players in the market are doing a great marketing job or that the newest model does offer so much more or both. Whatever it is, we cannot deny that the newest model of a body or lens or flash is always so seductive.

But I guess what can force us back to being logical is to ask ourselves what do we need. Sometimes we might need to buy brand new, sometimes we don’t. For example, if one is looking for a lens for photographing small prototypes under studio lights, does one really need the VR of the newer lens?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a strong believer on not being stingy when it comes to improving my photography skills. May it be gears or workshops. But lets not just succumb to Nikon or Canon’s marketing department and respond emotionally.

Simply ask ourselves:”What do we need? Will the newer model help improve our photography more?”

  1. I agree! I recently jumped into the FX ship and found myself priced out when it came to buying the “oars”. Trading it down to a D300s with lenses I want now. :)
